The design concept for “The Lodge” started with the idea of creating a home that would take in every view the property had to offer, while taking advantage of the land itself. When designing the home, the predominant view led us to place the garage on the right side of the house. The next important factor was space planning. We wanted each room to be as functional for the homeowner as possible. It is our belief that if a home does not work as a tool for the homeowner, the homeowner has to work for the home, which is not a functional process. Thus, we took the homeowners through a detailed process to ensure the functionality of the layout of the floor plan. Once the spaces were assigned we were able to create special features such as 2-1/2-story turrets, the two-story entry, and other architectural accents that reflect the European Arts and Crafts style.

The building project had many structural challenges to overcome. Due to the sloping lake lot, a portion of the foundation walls extended over fifteen feet high. Stem walls, 4000psi concrete, sona tubes and expanded metal comprised the structure of the foundation. The garden level exterior walls are all of 2x6 construction. Structural steel columns are 4x4 square, encapsulated by stacked stone. Beams and architectural jacks cantilever the boardwalk leading to the rear of the home.

Stone, shake siding, and cedar architectural detailing brought the Old World look to the home using New World materials. The custom shutters constructed on site along with hand-forged metal work accent the front elevation. The roofing material is constructed of fifty-year commercial grade CertainTeed shingles, which presented both application and structural challenges due to their weight. The quality craftsmanship of the stonework creates a true work of art. Cellulose insulation was used to enhance the energy efficiency of the home. The windows and doors are made of maintenance free Low-E glass with additional glazing for fade resistance and energy efficiency. Single divided light windows were used for curb appeal and design. The flooring and decking in the home is Australian Cypress, adding to the beauty of the home.

This project consisted of many players within the team that made “The Lodge” a true success. Everyone was proud to work on this project and the craftsmanship throughout the home shows it. The challenges presented in this project brought everyone together and created a better understanding of what we can look forward to in the future of residential design and construction.

There is one more thing about this project that must be said—the homeowners are truly happy. They have said, “There is not one thing that we would change; thank you”. This showed the team we have done the job we were hired to do. Thus, the project was a true success.
